Rhonda Rebman Lopez, chair of the Republican Party of Monroe County, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s been going on in the party.
The decision by President Donald Trump to go after Iran’s nuclear facilities seems to have been a good one.
Lopez said, “I couldn’t agree with President Trump more for what he did and I think the world as a whole agrees with what went on. I do believe that peace through strength is the way we’ll get there.”
Lopez’s husband has a long, decorated history with the military.
She said, “He follows this closely, and he definitely thinks that President Trump is doing the right thing, and he wanted to commend our military on what a great operation that was performed.”
Recruitment and morale are up in the military under Trump.
Lopez said, “The morale is really up and I commend again, President Trump regarding the morale, because I think the 250th anniversary parade with the army, I think that was really a beautiful, beautiful event. I was watching the fireworks and things that they had there just to instill pride in this country for our military and what our former military officers have given so much for and I’m very, very proud of our current administration, and I’m extremely proud of Secretary Rubio, who’s one of our own here in Florida.”
The Republican Party of Monroe County stood solidly behind Trump in his bid for reelection with the second term — and with his first term.
Lopez said, “Monroe County is firmly behind President Trump, and we got off the vote in our county, out of 67 counties, we, percentage wise, voted for Trump more than any other county in the state.”
While the state budget is still waiting on the governor’s okay, it looks as though about $130 million will come back to Monroe County from the state.
Lopez said, “We must all remember that the money that comes back is money that we send up there. So never be never be mistaken that that’s just given to us. Monroe County sends a lot of tax dollars to Tallahassee and we deserve a lot back. As a matter of fact, I would appreciate a lot more to come back from the session. Monroe County has helped a lot of other counties. There’s a lot of counties that for one reason or another, they don’t send as much up there as Monroe County. We tend to be a little bit of a donor county and I just really hope we can get a lot more back in the future. I’m very on top of things, especially locally and in our state, and we are so happy that we did get a budget finally passed. It seemed like there were a little bit of roadblocks there going on for a while. It took a little longer than usual, but it did get done, and we have a wonderful governor, and I still say he’s the best governor in the United States of America. I just think that he deserves all the support he can get, especially during this time and with the immigration situation and things going on on the national, local and he plays a big part in the national front, as well as our state front and local front. So I love our governor, and I support him, and so does our REC.”
The governor is expected to sign the budget by this weekend.
Lopez said, “I think that Governor DeSantis is a true leader, and he’ll make the right decisions. We also have a wonderful Attorney General that’s working really hard. I’ve been seeing he’s pretty much on the national front as well, and I’m watching a lot with James Uthmeier. He’s going to be coming down to the Keys and visiting us in the near future. I had a phone call from him this past week, and he’s very excited to be coming down, and he’ll probably bring his family. He has several kids, and he’s a hard, hard worker.”
