MCSO had to intervene during a domestic battery situation recently

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on in the county.

A 36 year old Key West Florida man was arrested for beating up a woman and she lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital recently.

Sheriff Ramsay said, “This was a domestic battery call on Stock Island. Got called out to a domestic in progress. And we get there, we find that this male had been involved with his girlfriend and domestic battery, and then in the course of beating up his girlfriend, the girlfriend’s mother, 62 year old female, tried to intervene to protect her daughter from the violence. When she tried to intervene, then the male took the anger out on the mother and beat her to the point that knocked her unconscious. At this point in time, it was getting out of control. So neighbors heard and saw the commotion. Neighbors rushed over to try to intervene. When they did, he saw he was going to be overpowered, he fled the scene. So we provided medical attention to the mother, who had to be brought to Lower Keys Medical for injuries, provided medical attention to the girlfriend. We got the witnesses and determined what took place. So we went out looking for this individual. We determined he’d been earlier involved in a hit and run with property damage as well. We did determine he was a convicted felon who failed to register as such. So we eventually did locate him. We charged him with multiple charges of aggravated battery, domestic violence, register as a convicted felon, hit and run with property damage. So he had a litany of charges and went over to spend time in my jail facility with the rest of the gang.”

In Marathon last Thursday, a person caused a lot of disturbances.

Sheriff Ramsay said, “This individual clearly is not a good person, not a nice person. Was on a rampage around the Gulfside Village area. He went to several businesses, and made verbal threats, gestures, threats to kill, threats to harm, threats to do bodily injury. Did grab an owner of one of the businesses, an individual, in this case, who was over 65 which enhanced it to a felony charge. So we got called from multiple businesses. As we were going he was moving from business to business. We actually found him around the 53rd Street area, and we did confront him. Ultimately, we did arrest him on multiple charges here for his actions. So unusual, crazy, but he spent time in the Rick Ramsay Bed and Breakfast.”

A 28 year old Key West Florida woman was arrested for resisting deputies attempting to assist Key West Police Department with a hit and run investigation recently.

Sheriff Ramsay said, “We just don’t understand why people just make the situation worse by not following commands or putting hands on police officers. Neither one’s ever going to work out. We did get called by our friends in Key West Police to help aid and assist with an investigation they’re working for a hit and run that occurred in the city of Key West. The suspect was determined to believe to be on Big Coppitt on Mars Lane. They asked to go out and look for the vehicle and try to identify it. We did locate the vehicle in question which had damage to the vehicle consistent to what the investigation was yielding in Key West. The female came out, was very agitated, combative, argumentative, giving our guys and gals really a hard time on scene. At some point in time, grabbed one of the police officers by the arm and shoulder area. The officer gave verbal commands to release him, to no avail. That’s a battery. When you touch someone without their consent, she would not take her hands off the officers to the point that they had to forcefully take her to the ground, handcuff her, ultimately arrested her for initial charges in the sheriff’s office for a battery on law enforcement officer. Other charges are pending from Key West police. But you just make this situation worse. We’re not going to go away and you can’t touch our officers. It just is hard to understand why people do some stupid stuff like they do. For every action there is a reaction, and we’re going to hold you accountable for your actions.”

A man in Marathon exposed himself in a bar and touched a woman inappropriately recently.

Sheriff Ramsay said, “This is sad. A young lady is sitting in a bar about four o’clock in the afternoon, the Hurricane Raw Bar in Marathon, the 62 year old Latin male comes up, sits up next to her and then next thing she knows, he’s grabbing her leg, putting his hand on her upper leg area. She told him to stop. He did not. She got up, moved to another seat further away. Short time later, this individual dropped his pants and was naked in the bar and started inappropriately touching himself at the bar. Someone did intervene to try to get compliance, and ultimately, a punch was even thrown in this case. But we did get on scene. We did arrest this individual for lewd and lascivious charges, indecent exposure. You can’t put your hands on people, and you surely can’t drop your pants in a bar and start touching yourself in front of other people. Doesn’t work out well, and you’re going to wind up just where he wound up at the jail. The booking photo was interesting. Had a really sad face, had a big frown on his face. His lower lip was bent down where he’s upset because he’s in jail. You don’t want to be sad in jail, don’t do stupid stuff.”

A 45 year old man from New York was arrested last week for breaking into and living at the fire station on Sugarloaf Key for approximately seven days.

Sheriff Ramsay said, “This is the Sugarloaf fire station, which is due to be torn down pretty soon. The fire department personnel had recently just moved out, but the building still had power utilities, water and is still standing. He was homeless, a 45 year old male from New York down here in Keys. He said he saw the building and thought it looked vacant. Checked the doors, found the back door open, went inside, and there was still set up with kitchen, bathrooms, bed, obviously some clothing from the fire department. So he just made himself at home, moved in, lived there about a week. Was cooking, taking showers and hanging out and sleeping at the fire station, found some fire department gear, and was wearing a Monroe County Fire Department polo shirt when we found him, Monroe County Fire Department shorts. So he was living a lifestyle. The only thing he didn’t do was drive the fire truck around. That’s about the only thing he didn’t do at the fire station. So we got a call from one of the battalion chiefs who noticed what he thought was somebody hanging around the property. We went and inspected and did find a person in the second story living areas living the life of Riley at the fire station.”
