Chairman of the Republican Party of Monroe County Rhonda Rebman Lopez joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on with the Republican Party.
The state legislature is taking a hard look at redistricting this week.
Lopez said, “I think it’s getting a lot of national attention, because Virginia made quite a statement with what went on there with their redistricting. But this was in the works before Virginia’s redistricting. This didn’t just come about because of Virginia. This has been in the works for a while. I’m sure our population has probably increased much more than Virginia’s in this amount of time, and that does make a difference. So we’ll see what happens. We just have to wait and see.”
What’s going to happen with the gubernatorial race?
Lopez said, “I haven’t heard anything lately about Casey DeSantis. Mostly, what I’m hearing is that Byron Donalds tends to be the front runner as far as fundraising, he’s definitely out there a lot. The lieutenant governor, Jay Collins, seems to be working hard. And then the former Speaker of the House, Paul Renner, those are the three that I’m hearing the most about, and those are the three that I get phone calls from their staff about wanting to come in and speak. And we welcome all candidates, Republican candidates that are running. Up until qualifying date, anything can happen. Anybody can get in. So there’s really no way to tell.”
Byron Donalds was in the Keys recently compliments of the Republican Party.
Lopez said, “We had him in at a small business up in Upper Key Largo, and he really did a great job, and did a one on one, pretty much like a little town hall. Anytime a candidate comes in and speaks one on one with our voters in Monroe County, that is a great way to gain support, that’s for sure. Fundraising is a big thing. The reason we do fundraising, we’ll be having our Reagan Day dinner coming up pretty soon, and celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. The proceeds from that go mainly for getting out the vote, and we do a lot of phone banking. We do a lot of slate cards, distributing just anything to energize, television, radio, commercials, interviews, things like that. And we really, really have to get out the vote. We have a lot of people that leave the Keys, of course, during the summer months, and a lot of people do vote by mail, but we just have to make sure we chase those absentee ballots.”
The shooting at the White House Correspondents dinner in Washington on Saturday was quite shocking.
Lopez said, “Thankfully, no one was hurt and I think our secret service and law enforcement did an excellent job protecting all involved. And as always, we have to pray for our first responders and all of our service people, because they are in harm’s way, and I just, I am so thankful for each and every one of them. And our president, I tell you, he’s something else.”
