Rogelio Hernandez, Director of Transportation for the city of Key West and Key West Transit, joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on with traffic.
Key West Transit is having two public meetings to talk about the ADA paratransit plan.
Hernandez said, “That would be on May 20. May 20, there’s the morning meeting from 10am till 12pm which will take place at 5701 College Road, and then an evening meeting between 6pm and 8pm and there’s two locations that we’re still trying to figure out where we will have that meeting at in the afternoon. More information on that particular evening meeting can be found at kwtransit.com. But the purpose of that public outreach and open house is to present and receive public comment on our ADA complimentary paratransit plan, which was approved recently by the commission, and we’re hoping to discuss the service areas that it will be providing service to, the days and hours of service, eligibility determination, appeal process, and tons more. And we’re hoping to receive input on the proposed service before implementation in July. Those that qualify can expect to have the service available from 6am till 8pm seven days a week, and the service area will include Key West, Stock Island and Key Haven. There is an eligibility process, which we’re going to go over thoroughly at the open house public meetings, along with the type of rights and an appeal process that those that apply may have.”
There are a number of different opportunities for people to take advantage for travel through Key West Transit.
Hernandez said, “The Lower Keys Shuttle operates seven days a week, connecting Marathon and Key West, with multiple designated stops along US 1, and that service offers an affordable and dependable alternative for commuters traveling and moving throughout the Lower Keys. Key West Rides, we’ve been operating that service now for a little over three years. It’s an app based technology service that matches multiple riders heading the same direction. So it operates seven days a week, between the hours of 5:45 and 8pm. It’s really popular, and I encourage everyone listening to download the app and give it a try. The workforce, that’s a fixed route service that’s dedicated and connecting Stock Island to Bahama Village. Again, it operates seven days a week on a fixed route. But, imagine how much more vehicles will be on the road without public transportation service. There’s only three days out of the year that we don’t operate, and we do that so the drivers could spend time with their family and loved ones, and those are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.”
It is cost effective to use Key West transit.
Hernandez said, “It’s $4 each way, unless you qualify for a reduced fare on the Lower Keys Shuttle and Stock Island to Key West is $2 each way, unless, again, you qualify for the reduced fare. And we also sell seven days and 31 day passes.”
