Two iconic Key West restaurants just put our area on the map!

Two iconic Key West restaurants have earned coveted recognition in the inaugural statewide Florida edition of the Michelin Guide, a milestone tourism officials say elevates the Florida Keys as an internationally recognized culinary destination.

Visit Florida Keys and Key West Senior Director of Public Relations Mary Haben joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s happening in the area.

The recognition of Blue Heaven and Moon Dog Cafe & Bakery marks a significant moment for the island’s restaurant community.

“It’s absolutely huge,” Haben said. “We received the news on May 28, less than six weeks ago, and two of our restaurants in Key West were the recipients of some amazing honors through Michelin.”

Blue Heaven was added to the Michelin Recommended list, while Moon Dog Cafe & Bakery earned the Bib Gourmand distinction, which recognizes restaurants offering exceptional food at a great value.

Haben said the awards demonstrate that the Florida Keys have become more than a destination known for beaches, boating and history.

“We’re a culinary contender in the space,” she said. “Most people who come to the Keys on a regular basis know there are hidden gems through here, the mom-and-pop restaurants. But now it’s elevated to a global, worldwide stage.”

Visit Florida Keys and Key West presented commemorative plaques to both restaurants shortly after the awards were announced.

“It was really heartwarming,” Haben said. “These are restaurateurs who have been doing this for decades and decades, and to recognize not only the families who started this, but their staff. They brought out the kitchen staff—the folks doing the hard work alongside them.”

Blue Heaven partner Richard Hatch III described the recognition as both an honor and a responsibility.

Haben said Blue Heaven has remained true to its Key West roots while continually refining its cuisine.

“They never changed who they were at the core,” she said. “They left that dirt lot. They let those roosters roam around. But they’ve elevated the food to such an inventive level.”

She said the attention to detail displayed by Blue Heaven’s culinary team was “next-level amazing.”

Moon Dog Cafe & Bakery was equally surprised by its Michelin recognition. Haben said General Manager Eric and the restaurant’s owners initially believed Michelin’s outreach was simply another promotional opportunity.

“When we came over with a brigade of about 20 people, including tourism officials and county commissioners, he was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I had no idea this was going to be such a big deal,'” Haben recalled.

She said Eric immediately gathered more than a dozen kitchen and restaurant employees so they could share in the presentation.

“He had us present it to them and hold it, which says a lot about the folks here,” she said.

According to Haben, Michelin inspectors evaluate restaurants using five primary criteria: quality of ingredients, harmony of flavors, cooking techniques, the chef’s personality expressed through the cuisine, and consistency.

“You walk in, you’re going to get the same taste, the same quality, the same service, the same experience,” she said. “That criteria is extremely stringent.”

Haben credited Visit Florida for expanding Michelin’s reach across the state by supporting the guide’s statewide rollout.

“Visit Florida decided to underwrite this and open it up for the whole state,” she said. “By doing that, they allowed the Florida Keys to be amplified on the culinary stage.”

Tourism officials believe the Michelin honors will help the Keys compete with larger Florida destinations known for fine dining.

“When we go to trade shows, we talk about how quirky Key West is, the incredible waters, the Seven Mile Bridge and the history,” Haben said. “Now we can also say we’re here, we belong here, and you’re going to see a lot more of us.”

In addition to celebrating the Michelin awards, Haben highlighted several upcoming tourism initiatives.

Visit Florida Keys and Key West’s annual “Keys Season” promotion begins Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 31, offering special lodging, restaurant, attraction and excursion packages throughout the island chain.

“We call it 113 miles of savings,” Haben said. “Our partners up and down the Florida Keys are offering exclusive deals and value-added experiences.”

Participating businesses are also offering flexible booking policies that allow travelers to cancel or reschedule without penalties under qualifying circumstances.

Haben also encouraged visitors participating in the annual lobster mini-season to prioritize safety on the water and on the road.

“We’re doing a boater safety campaign with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission,” she said. “Just be mindful. Keep an eye out for people in the water, other boaters, and obey the speed limits. We’re all in this together.”

Haben said the Michelin recognition, combined with continued tourism promotion and community partnerships, positions the Florida Keys for even greater international recognition in the years ahead.

“We’re only here because of the tourists that come here, the residents, and our incredible partners,” she said. “This is a full team effort throughout the entire Florida Keys and Key West.”
