The city of Key West is ready for Primary Day

Key West Mayor Denise “Dee Dee” Henriquez joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on in the city.

The Primary Election is tomorrow. Early voting has ended, but residents can still return mail-in ballots. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Henriquez said she is looking forward to election day and urged residents to make their voices heard.

“Please everybody get out and vote,” Henriquez said.

According to election figures, 19.56% of eligible voters had cast ballots ahead of election day.

The Monroe County Supervisor of Elections has indicated that election results will be certified August 26. The city’s newly elected utility board members, city commissioners and mayor are scheduled to be sworn in at noon August 28 in the Key West City Commission chambers.

Henriquez said there could still be a runoff for the District 4 commission race, with that election expected to take place in November if necessary.

In addition to the election, Henriquez highlighted several activities taking place throughout the week.

Her weekly “Meet the Mayor” session will take place today from 2 to 4 p.m. at City Hall. Residents are invited to stop by with questions, concerns or topics they would like to discuss.

“I always look forward to Mondays from two to four because you never know who’s going to come in and what they’re going to ask you,” Henriquez said.

The Tree Commission will meet at 5 p.m. Monday in the commission chambers. The Art in Public Places board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the Planning Board meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The city’s next Early Bird Cleanup is scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday and will be hosted by Laureate Key West Hotel. Henriquez said nearly 70 volunteers participated in the previous cleanup despite the summer heat.

“We had quite a few volunteers, so I was very excited about that,” she said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm will also be open Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., providing a family activity for children.

Henriquez encouraged residents to visit the City of Key West website to review upcoming meetings and agendas and find information about city programs.

She also highlighted Key West Connect, a city service that allows residents to submit complaints or requests and track their status.

“That gives you the opportunity to be able to track the complaint or the information that you’re presenting,” Henriquez said. “So it’s a great tool to have.”

Henriquez also congratulated Alice Parker, the city’s human resources benefits manager, who was recently named City of Key West Employee of the Year during a quarterly employee service awards gathering.

The city has changed the way employees are recognized, moving the awards ceremony away from the formal commission meeting. The awards are now presented in a more relaxed setting in the commission chambers, where members of the public are welcome.

Henriquez said the gatherings have become an enjoyable way to recognize city employees.

“I love going to those meetings,” she said.

With election day approaching, Henriquez said, “Please go out and vote, and have a safe week out there this week.”
