Monroe County Republican Party Chair Rhonda Rebman Lopez joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about the November election.
It’s important to remain engaged heading into the November general election. Turnout will be critical in several key Florida races.
Monroe County has work to do to repeat its previous success as Florida’s top county for voter turnout.
“Let’s just get out the vote,” Rebman Lopez said. “A lot of things can change between now and November.”
She pointed to the upcoming governor’s race, U.S. Senate contest and congressional races as contests that will require continued voter participation.
Republican Byron Donalds won the Republican nomination for governor and is expected to announce his running mate Tuesday at the Freedom Tower in Miami. Rebman Lopez said she expects the lieutenant governor pick to come from South Florida, although she said the announcement had not yet been made.
Rebman Lopez also encouraged voters to learn more about Amendment 3, a proposed property tax and homestead exemption measure. She said she supports the amendment and urged voters to review the actual language before making a decision.
“Read it, read it, read it,” Rebman Lopez said. “Do not listen to the propaganda. You be the judge. Read it yourself, and figure out how you want to vote.”
She disputed claims that the proposal would force local governments to cut essential services, saying voters should examine the measure and make their own determination.
The Monroe County Republican Party is also planning events designed to keep voters engaged after the primary.
The Southernmost Republican Club is scheduled to meet Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the American Legion, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Upper Keys Republican Club is scheduled to meet Monday, Sept. 28, in Tavernier.
Rebman Lopez said the meetings provide opportunities for residents to hear information, meet candidates and become involved in grassroots political activity ahead of November.
She also cautioned Republican voters against becoming complacent because of election forecasts.
“Let’s not get comfortable with these statistics,” she said. “You cannot be complacent and say, ‘Oh, we got this.'”
Rebman Lopez said Republicans need to continue working to turn out voters, particularly because of the amount of attention and campaign spending expected in statewide and federal races.
She said the party will continue emphasizing conservative values, fiscal accountability and voter participation and congratulated Republican candidates who won their primary races in Monroe County and calling for continued work ahead of the general election.
“Let’s just keep working as hard as we can,” she said.
