Nikki Sommer, a nurse with Key West Surgical Group, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5 FM for Medical Matters this morning.
Diet soda may not be all it’s cracked up to be.
Sommer said, “Some people grab the diet soda instead of a coffee because they’re not coffee drinkers. So listen up. It’s a myth that diet soda is good for you. No, it’s not. It is not good for you. Here’s what most people think, if I’m cutting out sugar and calories by drinking a diet soda instead of regular soda, I am making a healthier, better choice. It sounds good, but research is showing that diet soda isn’t the Get Out of Jail Free card we thought it was.”
There are a lot of chemicals in diet soda.
Sommer said, “There was a study done, it was by the American Diabetes Association, actually, and they took 81 women with type two diabetes, and they gave half the group water as a substitute, and the other half was diet soda. So 90% of the water group reached diabetes remission. That’s a big statement. I know it’s a smaller study, but that’s a big statement. That’s after 18 months. So the massive difference, it wasn’t the calories, it’s the chemical makeup. So here that you need to watch out for aspartame, sucralose, and an artificial sweetener, and they believe they confuse your metabolism.”
The body actually fights back once it’s being fooled.
Sommer said, “Your body feels like you’re playing a trick on them. So it fights back. So long term studies have showed that people drink diet soda regularly, have a higher risk of type two diabetes, increased risk of stroke and heart disease and weight gain over time, not weight loss. Even compared to people who drink regular soda, diet soda drinkers didn’t always have better outcomes either. It’s just not about the sugar, it’s about those ultra processed ingredients.”
What are the alternatives to diet soda?
“Water,” Sommer insisted. “Plain, sparkling or infused with citrus or cucumber, unsweetened teas, like herbal, green or black tea. Coffee in moderation, no sugary creamers. So, if you drink black coffee, not that you want to drink black coffee, or you put in just half and half a little bit of cream, even skim milk, it’s going to be better than any type of sugary substitute, especially if, like I said, there are people that will drink a soda in the morning or a diet soda in the morning for the caffeine, because it has caffeine, as opposed to coffee because they don’t like it. Electrolyte water, too, is also good. There’s a lot of waters with electrolytes in them. I think smart water states, they have electrolytes in it. There’s no calories. So anything with that added sweeteners that’s water based, is the better option than soda, especially diet soda.”
Key West Surgical Center can help you feel better and look better.
Sommer said, “We’re getting radio frequency micro needling. I am so excited. Our training is August 1, so we’re already accepting appointments and consultations for that. Radio frequency micro needling is really the best option, especially for when you have those deeper wrinkles or deeper pitted acne scarring, you need to break up that scar tissue. So combined with the laser, the radio frequency micro needles, it’s a group of needles that go into the skin to help break up that scar tissue, along with heat. So the radio frequency generates heat. It heats the tissue, making it softer, making it easier for those needles to break up that scar tissue. It’s also good to treat, which I get a lot of people complaining about those perioral lines around your mouth that go around your mouth and your chin. They’ve always been called like smoker lines, but there are people that just have them. Drinking from a straw for a very long time can contribute to that. The radio frequency can help soften those lines and make your skin more taut. So the radio frequency and the laser work great together. It’s a great combination treatment, but it also, works great by itself, too. So lots of options when we add radio frequency microneedling, and also, we talked about it helps with stretch marks as well.”
