Michelle Nevel, Development Director for AHEC Monroe County, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about an upcoming fundraiser.
AHEC serves all of the Monroe County school age children with no cost medical care and low cost dental care.
Nevel said, “There are about 9,700 registered students in the Monroe County School District, and last year, we provided patient visits for over 9,000 children between our medical and dental services, so it’s a very critical need in our community, and we are having a little fundraising event this week in support of our medical and dental clinics that we would love for everyone to come out and join us.”
The Middle Keys Mixer will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Grassy Flats Resort and Beach Club.
Nevel said, “It is a lovely setting, and we just want everyone to come out, have a good time with us and know that they’re doing a great thing by supporting our Children’s Medical and Dental Clinics while they’re there. Tickets include music, appetizers, beer and wine and beautiful water views. So we would love everyone to come out and join us and support our clinics.”
Tickets can be purchased in advance.
Nevel said, “You can find the tickets by either going on our social media, we have a link there that you can go to and purchase tickets, or you can also get them through our website, as soon as you go to our website, it’ll pop up, have all the information there, and then you can get your tickets right there as well.”
AHEC provided 47,904 services between the 2023 and 2024 school year.
Nevel said, “Along with our mobile dental unit that travels up and down the Keys, we also have 10 medical clinics right in the schools, in 10 of the Monroe County schools spread all the way from Key Largo to Key West, so the children can get the care no matter where they are at. We do also offer summer hours as well, with both the medical and dental, that way there’s no break in care throughout the entire year, these students can have access to the care that they need. We just want to make sure that everyone is aware that these services are available here for anyone that has children in the school system, so if they have any questions or anything, they can find all the information on our website. We have a section on our website that is just dedicated to the school clinics, and if anyone is interested in our tobacco cessation programs, that information is also there, listed under tobacco cessation and of course, if they ever have any questions, they can give us a call here, and we’ll be happy to help anyone who has questions.”
