Dariana Molina, Regional Communications Manager for the Greater Miami and Florida Keys Red Cross, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s been going on with the Red Cross.
Holiday safety is very important around this time of year.
Molina said, “We find that December is the peak time for home fires, involving candles and holiday decorations. So the main thing I would say is to try to use battery operated candles if you can, and always be practicing your fire escape plan.”
Candles with cords can be tricky because the cords can get faulty.
Molina said, “We do say that if you are going to use regular candles to try to try to keep them away from anything that may burn. We encourage you to check all of your holiday cords, make sure none are frayed or broken. We also make sure to ensure that our outside decorations are for outdoor use, meaning that they’re insulated and protected from any weather.”
Artificial trees should have a fire resistant label on it.
Molina said, “If you’re getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and keep it watered. Follow the instructions given by the place you got it.”
There’s also extra cooking going on this time of year.
Molina said, “The main thing really, is to just never leave anything that you’re cooking unattended.”
The Red Cross is always in need of volunteers.
Molina said, “As you know, 90% of our workforce is made up of volunteers, but we are always looking for more. We’re always looking for volunteers for our disaster cycle services department so that they can be kind of the first on the scene for those home fires and things.”
This is also a good time of year to remind people to have proper smoke detectors and make sure the batteries are operable.
Molina said, “We do offer free smoke alarm installations. You can contact your local Red Cross or you can visit www.redcross.org and make an appointment.”
