Nancy Klingener, Community Affairs Manager for Monroe County Public Library, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s been going on in the libraries.
All programs from the libraries are free and open to the public.
Klingener said, “You don’t even need to have a library card to attend. We’ve got all our usual great story times, craft sessions, all that kind of stuff, but we also have a lot of special events going on this time of year here, so I thought I’d give you a rundown on those. Let’s start at the top in Key Largo, the Key Largo branch, which is in the Trade Winds Shopping Center, on this Monday, on the 27th at 11am they’re going to have a talk about coral reef stewardship from the coral restoration foundation. A week from today, Thursday, January 30, from 1 to 3, there’ll be a cultural performance by Tibetan monks, and every first Wednesday of the month, we have a plant clinic, but this one upcoming on February 5, from 9am to noon, they’ll be making a heart shaped peanut butter and seed feeder. You can learn tips on bird watching. Islamorada, this Saturday, their movie matinee at 12:30 is going to be the movie Once, the Irish folk Sing Movie. Then next week, on Tuesday is their monthly matinee. They show the same movie twice at two o’clock and 5:30 so whichever time works better for you.”
These are all free – you don’t even need a library card.
Klingener said, “You can come on in, if you’re visiting from out of town, come on in. Bring your family, whatever you like. Tuesday, January 28 at 2 and 530 Islamorada library will be showing Clue the 1985 movie. That’s the adaptation of the board game. That one was tons of fun. Marathon next month has some special concerts going on. On Thursday, February 6, at five o’clock, they’ve got the Vellamo Band, which is a folk duo from Finland. Then on Tuesday, February 28 at four o’clock. They have the Veronneau Band, a husband and wife duo. She’s Quebecois, and he is from the UK. And on Valentine’s Day, which is Friday, February 14, at two o’clock, they’ve got a love poem workshop with local author, Susannah Simpson, and she’ll be giving us tips on how to write different kinds of love poems, how to create a basic couplet, stuff like that.”
Big Pine Key in the Winn Dixie Shopping Center will have some senior activities in February.
Klingener said, “On the second Thursday of the month, which will be the 13th, they’re going to have senior adults crafter-noon, and they will be making a hanging mason jar bird feeder, because, once again, it’s national bird feeding month in February. The third Thursday, they’re going to be hosting a Senior Games meet up. That’s the 20th. They also have a regular crochet club that meets on Wednesdays at 1:30 and they’ve got a special project going on where they’re making baby blankets for the Lower Keys Medical Center maternity ward. Finally, Key West down here at 700 Fleming Street, we have a program called cafe con libros that meets every Tuesday at 10am in the palm garden, weather allowing, where local and independent authors talk about their books, and we serve coffee and tea and other hot drinks that are especially appreciated right now. The Friends of the Library has their palm garden book sale on Saturday, February 8, from 10 to 1, and there’s a special showing at the Tropic on Wednesday next week of All Fall Down. That’s a 1962 movie with Warren Beatty and Eva Marie Saint and it’s based on a book by James Leo Hurley, who lived in Key West and was partially filmed in Key West and Dr. Corey Malcom, our lead historian is going to be doing an introduction and talking about the making the film. So I do want to let you know that the movie under the stars that was scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed just because it’s supposed to be pretty windy and they have an inflatable screen and it’s going to be cold, so War Games will not be showing outside the front of the Tropic on Saturday.”
All the information can be found on the website.
Klingener said, “If you go to locations in that top green bar and find your branch, you’ll find the calendar for that branch. You can also see newsletter sign up right there on the home page, and on the last day of the month, you get an email that tells you everything that’s coming up at your branch and you can sign up for the Florida Keys History Center newsletter Island Chronicles and this month’s edition of Island Chronicles is also on the home page, just to give you a feel for what those are like. The today in keys history is posted every day on our website and the island Chronicles. And if you look at the one that’s posted there now at the bottom, there’s a link where you can go and look at the back issues if you’re interested.”
