Rogelio Hernandez, Interim Director of Transportation for Key West Transit, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about travel.
Key West Transit helped at last weekend’s air show.
Hernandez said, “We were there participating with an air conditioning bus, offering a cool down station for the crowd. Because it can get pretty hot out there on the tarmac.”
There is a bus replacement program.
Hernandez said, “Our mission statement is to provide a safe and dependable and reliable service, and one way for us to do so is by continuously replacing our fleet when it’s met its useful life. In the case of a bus, it’s 12 years, approximately 500,000 miles. Key West transit is charging forward into a greener future with our first zero emission battery electric bus. We’re just super excited. My team and I just had our pre production meeting last week, and that bus is going to come equipped with a 686 kilowatt hours storage unit, which will help optimize the range and also reduce downtime. So with one single charge, we should be able to operate that bus all day. Additionally, that bus is now scheduled to go into production sooner than we anticipated, so mid November, to be exact. So fingers crossed, we might have that bus as a Christmas gift. It has 32 seating capacity, with an additional 20 standing if need be.”
What route will the electric bus take?
Hernandez said, “It’s going to be a local route, and more information will come.”
There’s also the Workforce Express and Key West Rides.
Hernandez said, “They can download the Key West Ride app or give us call at 305-809-3910.”
The Lower Keys Shuttle is another service, but that will be altered on Saturday for the Seven Mile Bridge run from 6am to 9am.
Hernandez said, “The Lower Keys Shuttle service will be delayed until after 9am, so the Lower Keys Shuttle heading southbound, departing Marathon will begin at 9:21, departing mile marker 53.5 to be exact, and will continue its regular route thereafter, and then, of course, the Lower Keys Shuttle bus, leaving Key West with depart at 9:26am from Whitehead Street. So that’s something to keep in mind.”
