Key West Mayor Dee Dee Henriquez joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on in the city.
The rumor that drones from Cuba could be attacking targets in Key West was unfounded.
Henriquez said, “We have not heard anything from the federal and/or the state level. We have not been notified, and even from the military. So, not sure what’s going on out there, but I can tell you, we have not been notified. But we are prepared in the event if something is to happen, but like I said, we have not been notified.”
A gala on Saturday recognized and honored our law enforcement.
Henriquez said, “The chief and I, we were up there. There was over 1,000 people who attended that gala, but I will tell you, listening to their stories and listening to what they do each and every day, and how they leave their homes to protect us, and sometimes some of them don’t make it home. I just have the utmost respect for our police men and women, our firemen and women, just have the utmost respect for them, support them in any way that I can. The city of Key West was represented Saturday in Miami.”
Key West Transit will have an Open House on Wednesday.
Henriquez said, “On Wednesday, there are two meetings on that day. So, the first open house is from 10 to 12 at the Stock Island facility, that’s 5701 College Road. And then, if you can’t make that meeting, then there’s another one from six to eight that afternoon, and that’s going to be at the Frederick Douglass gym, so come on down. There’s two opportunities, like I said, 10 to 12 in the Stock Island facility, or six to eight at the Frederick Doug’s gym. So, yes, please come on down.”
You can talk to the mayor today from 2 to 4.
Henriquez said, “We have open hours today from two to four, so come on down and talk about anything you’d like to talk about, questions, comments, concerns. Please come on down from two to four, and just reminder, it’s every single Monday from 2 to 4. The only time that we cancel is because I’m probably out there doing city business, or I’m out of town, or at least one time I was out of town because I was in St. Augustine looking at their amphitheater. So it’s every Monday, two to four. So please come on down and chat.”
There are a number of activities this week.
Henriquez said, “Also on Wednesday, I will be reading a proclamation at 11am for the EMS, the Emergency Management System at the Lower Keys Hospital, so I’ll be doing that at 11, and then from there I’m presenting the state of the city for the Realtors Association, that will be at noon, and again, the Art in Public Places, they meet at 5:30 in the commission chambers, and then also on Thursday I will be attending the 250th year salute at the College of the Florida Keys, that will be at 1pm The planning board meeting will start at five in the chambers on Thursday, and then on Friday we do have the plogging, the early bird cleanup, so Friday we’ll be at the Shell Gas station in Key Haven, so please come on down, volunteer. I know it’s going to be warm out there, but it’s still early, it’s at 8 a.m. Meet us down there and we’re going to pick up garbage on the side of US 1. Then on Sunday, just so everybody knows, we have the Salute to Service 5k run and that race is going to begin at the Marker Resort, so there will be some rolling street closures along the route. As a reminder, for next Monday we will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.”
The Key West Conchs girls softball team made regional champs and are now moving on to the final four.
Henriquez said, “We are so excited. Matter of fact, City Hall is lit up in red for the Key West Conchs. So, again, congratulations to the Lady Conchs. They do play this Thursday. They’re the Final Four, so we have our fingers crossed for them to be able to win their first state championship. I would like to mention one thing about Higgs Beach. I know there was some issues when we took over that the doggie bags were missing from the little dispensers, but I will tell you, we do have them back. They are filled, so anybody that goes to the dog park bags are actually there currently. They were accustomed to having those bags there while it was owned by the county, and during that transition they were removed, but they have been replaced. Go to our website, stay informed. There’s a lot going on this week. Please participate in some of our meetings that we have available, and be safe.”
