Let’s check in with the Republican Party of Monroe County

Rhonda Rebman Lopez, chair of the Republican Party of Monroe County, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about elections.

A record turnout for Republicans in the last election has garnered a lot of Republican leaders.

Lopez said, “I’m so proud that we have so many dedicated Republican leaders in our county, because it’s really proven to be excellent for us as citizens. I constantly tout how wonderful our people in Monroe County are getting out the vote. That’s the most important thing. Have your voice heard and we definitely did that. Out of 67 counties in state of Florida, Monroe County got out the vote, percentage wise, more than any county in the state.”

Aaron Castillo, the city commissioner for District Six, attended the Republican Club meeting last night.

Lopez said, “Commissioner Castillo is a very hard worker, and I’m very happy that he attended, and my understanding is they had a great turnout. Being engaged locally is so important in our Republican Party and southernmost has always been a very active Republican Club.”

The Upper Keys Republican Club will meet on Monday, April 28 at San Pedro Church in Tavernier.

Lopez said, “We all stay very involved, even in a local level. We have the Middle Keys Republican club as well. I know that our Republican clubs have been very active in being involved. We’ve got a Superintendent of Education position open. We, of course, want a wonderful conservative candidate, and there’s several that are vying for that position, so we try to keep everyone aware of who’s vying, get the community’s input, and that’s a really, really important position in our county for our children’s education.”

The legislative process in Tallahassee is scheduled to close out session in a few weeks.

Lopez said, “It’s not unheard of for them to extend session if they can’t get that budget locked in. So we’ll see what happens. On a lighter note, our chairman and executive director and their children were in Washington, DC yesterday for the Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn with President Trump and First Lady Melania. I watched it on social media, and it was just a beautiful event. I attended that event Trump’s first term, and it is just gorgeous. They were really engaged. The President was coloring, they all had coloring books, and he was sitting there coloring, and Melania, the First Lady, was reading a story about Easter and I was just so thankful that we have them in office. They’re awesome.”

President Trump will be attending the Pope’s funeral in a few days.

Lopez said, “Pope Francis, may he rest in peace. I’m so proud that our President, First Lady, will be attending this service and Vice President Vance and his wife and children were there with Pope Francis the day before he passed. That’s just a really historic event that occurred. May our Pope rest in peace.”

Traffic has been an issue recently.

Lopez said, “There’s been a lot of traffic backup in the Islamorada area, and it hasn’t been a good thing, because people are missing their events at school, and businesses are having issues, their customers can’t get in at the normal rate, and that affects revenue. So I really hope that something can happen in a positive direction with this traffic. I don’t know what they’re going to do, but I know social media, there’s a lot of long threads, people that are very frustrated. So hopefully our commissioners and people that are involved in that can help us out and the DOT and get that straightened out, because we just can’t continue for several weeks on this course, or even a year. Let’s just make sure and pray for our leaders and Republican and Democrat and Independents, because prayer is very, very important. I think that we’re fortunate to have a wonderful president and a wonderful governor, and I just really hope that we can work together and just make this country great again.”
