Marathon Mayor Robyn Still joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s been going on in the city.
While the school year is coming to an end, there are some great accomplishments in sports, particularly the girls’ softball.
Still said, “Our boys did an amazing job. I think they made history in Marathon. They went very far. It was very disappointing. I think Coral Shores had the same disappointment. But I just want our boys to be proud of how far they went, what they achieved. I think that’s amazing. However, sports lives on in Marathon. I think our track team, they’re doing exceptionally well. I think they’re advancing too. But I do know that the girls’ softball team is taking the first step towards state championship. They have a game against Miami Christian, Wednesday night at seven. It’s up there at Miami Christian. So I wish them all the luck. I’m a Take Stock mentor, so I’m very proud to say my Take Stock mentee plays first base. I wish I could go to that game. But her mom is always amazing. She does Facebook live so I kind of can watch while this game is happening. So I’m just wishing them safe travels and a wonderful game. They had a great season. So that’s pretty much what’s happening throughout the school right now, I’m probably missing some things. I know everybody’s getting geared up for end of school year coming.”
Summer camps are coming up.
Still said, “If you’re one of those parents and you haven’t quite made your summer plans, there are lots of summer camps that are going on in our city and throughout the Keys. There are so many amazing camps. The city itself is doing a camp with Park and Rec. They do an amazing job there. Those kids get to go do lots of fun things. Crane Point always has a wonderful summer camp. Pigeon Key always has a good one. There are others that are just as wonderful. So parents, you still have the chance to get your kids involved in some of the summer programs. They can have fun learning. I tried to convince my son at one point to do the overnight at Pigeon Key, but he was a mama’s boy and was having none of that. I have friends whose children went to that and had a great time. I wish I was a kid. I would be signing up for some of those. Makes me jealous.”
The final main stage show of the season for Marathon Community Theater is Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap.
Still said, “I’m looking forward to that. I’ve not gone yet. This past weekend was their opening weekend. They have 10 dates that they’re showing. I plan to go this upcoming weekend. I always enjoy those productions. Also they do a summer camp for the kids. One of my favorite productions to attend of theirs is that end of the summer kids’ production. I did not have kids in it at all. I’ve never had kids in it because my kids were too old by the time we moved here. But we went, I think it was two years ago, because we knew families that had children there and because we like to support the theater. It was the most amazing production. We have not missed a year. We already automatically know that we are scheduling nothing when that’s going to happen so we can go. So if you want a fun time for that, to see these kids put on these productions, that’s the time to go, too. That will be on their Facebook page and their website. That’s towards the end of summer, but that’s great. I mean, the community theater, a lot of people don’t really know what they do there. I just urge you to take a look, it is amazing and it’s right here in Marathon, you don’t have to travel far.”
Marathon City Council will meet on May 14.
Still said, “The last I checked is going to be a fairly light agenda. I think the planning commission was not meeting and sometimes that generate some agenda items for us. So from what I understand the agenda is fairly light. There may be add ons that I don’t know about and of course, I wouldn’t know about them until we got to the meeting. But as of right now, I can’t think of anything that would be added on that would be controversial or pretty involved. It just seems like we’re going to have business as usual for the meeting.”
Hurricane Preparedness Week is this week.
Still said, “The Keys Weekly has a hurricane guide that’s coming out. It comes out every single year. It gives you, if you’re new to the Keys or are new to hurricane season, it gives you some tips and what you need to do. But what I urge everybody is to go ahead and start making those plans. I would rather be prepared and not need my stuff than get last minute and fight the crowd at the store to try to get what I might need. I have a hurricane kit I do every year. Basically what I put in mine is of course I have first aid kit, ibuprofen, sunscreen, things like that, bug repellent in case I’ve state for a storm and then you’ve got to do some cleanup, but I also have some shelf stable food. That way if you lose power, if you’ve stayed and you lose power, you have food you can eat. Peanut butter crackers, Velveeta cheese actually is pretty good because you don’t have to refrigerate that for a long time. Don’t forget your pets. Make sure you have food for them. Have bottled water because you don’t know what your water supply may or may not be in the event of a storm like that. Candles, batteries, flashlights, act as if you’re going to have to go camping and you’re deep in the woods and there are no amenities around.”
Mother’s Day is coming up.
Still said, “Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. Everybody stay safe. Enjoy the end of the school year. I know there’s going to be some moms and dads that can’t believe that school year is over. My son’s just finished the first year of college. I never thought I would say that. But let’s support these graduating seniors. Let’s support the students that struggle to get through school. Those are the ones who have worked hard and let’s celebrate their achievements. Sometimes they don’t get recognized like they should, because they might not be the star student, but they struggled and they made it. So let’s honor them as well. I think that’s really important. Not to take anything away from the students that that did excellent. But we do have those students that struggle their whole school career and this is quite an achievement. Sometimes they get forgotten because everybody’s talking about the students that school’s come easy, or they’ve worked super hard, and they make good grades, but you have some of those other students that really struggled and let’s be proud for them, too.”
