Monroe County Library can help make the holidays special with ebooks and videos

Nancy Kingener, with Monroe County Libraries, joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning about what’s going on in the libraries.

Libby is the program where ebooks and e-audio books can be found.

Klingener said, “Right now there’s a special sort of online book club going on called Libby Reads with a book called The Village Beyond the Mist. The book was actually published 50 years ago in Japan. It’s the first time it’s been translated into English, but it’s the basis for the film Spirited Away, if you are aware of that. It’s a kid’s book intended for about ages eight and up. Might be something cool to listen to or read with the whole family over the holiday weekend. There’s coloring sheets that you could download and print out for the kids as well.”

Libby is also available on the app – maybe listening to an audio book while you travel for Thanksgiving would be a good idea.

Klingener said, “There’s more than 5,000 titles. They’re all up there. There’s backlists. There’s no waiting. You don’t have to put a hold on it like you would for a popular book. So if you’re looking for a last minute recipe idea or decorating or you want to make something as a holiday gift, it’s a great resource. If you go to our website, right along the top, there’s a little block that says online, 24/7 e-library. It will show you all our different online resources. You can even sign up for a library card if you don’t have one, and get started right away with the ebooks or the streaming video or the classes, anything you want.”

The libraries will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday from the 27th through the 29th and the events calendar lets you know what’s coming up.

Klingener said, “It’s pretty cool because, first of all, you can filter it by branch, which you’d probably want to find out what’s going on at the branch closest to you. But you can also set up, if you see something you really want and you don’t want to forget about it, you can set up an email reminder to yourself so you get an email a day before the event, you can add it to either your Google or I-calendar, and you can share it. So if you’re like, oh, this friend of mine would really like to also go to the same program, you can share the event with them.”

Kanopy is program that has movies.

Klingener said, “We still have DVDs if you have a DVD player, and we also have Kanopy our streaming service, that streams to your TV, your laptop, your phone. I always like to remind people that down at the very bottom of the website, underneath the county seal, is where you can sign up for our email newsletter. Those go out each month, one newsletter on the last day of the month to tell you what’s coming up in the next month. So we’re putting the final touches on the December newsletter right now and it also just reminds you of some of the other cool resources that you can get from the library.”
