Key West Mayor Dee Dee Henriquez joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on in the city.
The city commission will meet on May 7.
Henriquez said, “The city staff and city manager, I believe it’s on Thursday, they’re going to have their agenda setting meeting, so that’s when they go over everything to make sure that they are prepared and have all the information, so we’ll see what’s going to happen on May 7. That will start at 9am. I do know that the water quality conversation is going to continue from last month to this month, so I know that that’s going to be on the agenda. So we’ll see what happens on Thursday.”
The Conch Republic is having their Independence Celebration.
Henriquez said, “I do remember a lot of that, but I will say Friday, I was able to kick off the Conch Republic Independence Celebration. So we were down there at Mallory Square and just kicking it off, blowing that conch shell, and just it was really a fun event down there. And then yesterday, I was able to participate. I was able to judge the mooing contest for the Cow Key Bridge 0k run. So I was out there with a couple hundred mooing cows that were able to cross the bridge. I had such a great time. We were able to cross the bridge, get over there for the 0k run. But yes, I think it was the first time that they ever did the mooing contest, so I was able to participate in that. So yes, Conch Republic celebration. It’s all week long, and we do have some stuff going on. Please check the website, the Conch Republic website, because they have a calendar with all the events. And I do know Saturday, they’re going to have the Conch Republic bed races on Duval Street, and that’s going to be from 1 to 6. So if you haven’t seen that, that is such a great time as well, please go down there. So Duval Street from Olivia to Southern and it will be closed just so that everybody knows. On Friday, I was introduced as the Prime Minister.”
A tree commission meeting will be held at City Hall tomorrow.
Henriquez said, “We do have the tree commission meeting starting at 5pm in the chambers. And then we have Earth Day. Dorian is very, very involved in this. Who’s hosting it is the hub and educational village is going to be at Indigenous Park from 8am until noon. I am going to be plogging and picking up garbage with my group, and my section is going to be from the triangle all the way to Bayview Park. So I will have wagons and garbage bags and lots of water making sure I can make it. If you would like to participate in picking up garbage anywhere in our city, please reach out. I know there’s a lot of groups out there. You can go to the website. She has everything out there. So big day on Wednesday for Earth Day, trying to pick up all the garbage in our city and make a difference.”
Friday there will be another cleanup at Mallory Square.
Henriquez said, “There’s always garbage to pick up, unfortunately, but Ocean Key Resort will be hosting the event that starts at 8am so go ahead and meet at Mallory Square and then we have the reenactment of the great sea battle of the Conch Republic land forces starting at 7pm and that will be on the T dock at Mallory Square. So like I said, go to the Conch Republic website for the events for this whole week. They have something lined up every single day.”
The ownership of Higgs Beach will be transferred to the city from the county on May 1.
Henriquez said, “I’m very excited about that. So our staff, city staff, city manager, the city administrator with the county and all of her staff have been working very closely together, lots of meetings, transfer, trying making sure they have everything ready to transfer on May 1. So yes, we will take it over on May 1, but it will also take some time to make sure the grants and the insurance claims and everything that we have transferred over to the city, but I am looking forward to that day.”
Saturday will be Mote Marine’s Ocean Fest.
Henriquez said it will be “from 11 to 4, and that’s going to be at the Truman waterfront as well. And then there’s Reeling for the Cause kids fishing tournament, and that’s going to be on White Street pier, and that’s from 3 to 8:30. Other than the Conch Republic festivities, there’s still a lot of things going on in our city. Always stay involved. Go to our website. It’s always updated every day with all of the new information. And have a great week and be safe out there.”
