Key West Mayor Dee Dee Henriquez joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on in the city.
The mayor read a proclamation for the Presidential Descendant’s forum over the weekend.
She said, “I actually got to spend a little bit of time with them prior to the forum. So there were six descendants. So you had Clifton Truman Daniel, who is a great grandson of the 33rd President Harry S Truman. You had Ulysses Grant. He was the great grandson of President Grant, 18th president. You had Mary Jean Eisenhower, the granddaughter of the 34th president, President Eisenhower. James Carter, the grandson of the 39th president, which was President Carter. Tweed Roosevelt, president Roosevelt, and Massee McKinley, who was a second great nephew of President McKinley. So I was beyond proud and honored to be able to spend a little bit of time with each of them and then be able to read a proclamation. I was very blessed.”
The event occurred at the Truman Little White House, where a number of presidents stayed.
Henriquez said, “With President Carter being there, they had asked James, how old was he when he was there? And he said he was 18 years old when he was at the Little White House.”
A meeting with US Representative Carolos Gimenez is coming up.
Henriquez said, “I received an email over the weekend, and our assistant city manager had informed our city manager that he had been contacted by Congressman Gimenez’s Chief of Staff, who asked if we could host the Congressman, this Wednesday afternoon, which, of course, we gladly accepted. So now we’re just waiting for an itinerary, and I’m looking forward to meeting with him and building that partnership at the federal level, and talk to him about our housing with Commissioner Lee at Sigsbee and wherever else he can help us at the federal level, so I am looking forward to meeting with him.”
Last week, Henriquez christened the American Legend cruise line.
She said, “I was able to christen the brand new ship to Key West by breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow, which I splattered the champagne all over me. So if you saw my pictures on Facebook, it was a perfect shot. I was very excited, very honored. The tradition of christening the ship is deeply rooted in maritime history, and it signifies the blessing and safety of good fortune. So I was very honored to be able to do that. I’m just glad that the champagne bottle broke on the first try. I was a little nervous about that, but it was a lot of fun, and I was happy to do it. Our previous mayor, she’s the godmother of the other ship, and I am now the godmother of the American Legend.”
Henriquez’s husband saw his 400th career baseball win with Key West High School.
She said, “I am beyond proud of my husband with his 400th career win, and that is just with Key West High School, and that happened Friday night. That doesn’t include all the wins when he was with the Atlanta Braves and or the Yankees. So yes, we are very beyond proud of his 400th career win at Key West High School.”
The State of the City is coming up as well.
Henriquez said, “I’m very excited. I did see the state of the city finally, just about complete on Friday. I’m looking forward to be able to show it on our March 4 commission meeting. I know there’s a lot of people waiting to see that, so I am excited about it and we will be updating everyone in what’s going on in our city, and it’ll be throughout our city, from Eaton Street to the John Jones center to Duval revitalization to Mallory Square. So it’s going to talk a little bit about everything that’s going on in our city, so I’m excited to show it.”
