There are some changes coming to the Duval loop with Key West Transit

Rogelio Hernandez, Director of Transportation for the city of Key West, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about transportation.

The Duval loop for Key West Transit will undergo a change as of July 7.

Hernandez said, “Starting Monday, July 7, the Duval loop will transition from fair free to fair payment service. So it will be charging $1 each ride. Or riders can purchase an all day pass for $4, so you can hop on, hop off as many times as you like. There’s also an opportunity to purchase a seven day pass, a weekly pass, for $8. Now I do want to say that those passes are available for purchase on board the bus with cash only, or they can purchase digitally through token transit mobile app using a credit card or a debit card. Key West pass holders, that already use the bus service can use those passes on the Duval loop, so there’s no need for an additional or separate fare and locals and visitors that are using the park and ride at the Old Town garage, can also enjoy a free Duval loop by simply showing their parking receipts. That benefit applies to those residents down here with the employee parking permit as well.”

Key West Rides provides an on demand service.

Hernandez said, “Key West Rides is still operating seven days a week, from six in the morning until eight in the evening. We are looking at possibly expanding that in the future, as we’re getting some feedback from our riders and the residents that the service is needed later in the evening hours. So that’s something to look forward to.”

Dade County is a very good partner with transportation throughout the county.

Hernandez said, “Since 2005 the Lower Keys shuttle has been running service from Key West to Marathon, and it meets with Miami Dade transit Route 301, there at US 1 and Sombrero Beach Road. That’s been happening for quite some time now, with about six transfer trips. So it’s a great way to navigate through the Lower Keys, and not have to worry or through the Upper Keys as well, and not have to worry about traffic and leaving the driving to our professional bus operators.”

Streets will be congested on July 4.

Hernandez said, “To help everyone enjoy the Independence Day firework safely and conveniently, we are extending our service hours on the Key West Rides until 10pm, so again, until 10pm Key West Rides service is extended. Of course, it’s available through advanced reservation on the app. For trip planning services, riders can always reach us at 305-809-3910, or visit kwtransit.com for additional bus information.”
