Misha McRae, Executive Director of Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden, joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on in the garden.
Nature and Nurture is happening tomorrow in the garden.
McRae said, “We want to invite and include the entire community for a full day of plants, art, wellness and the garden’s history as it’s just a new way to explore the Botanical Garden. Our program, Nature and Nurture includes the native plant sale and the kitchen scraps drop off, compost demonstration in the garden from nine to noon tomorrow. From 10 to 12, we do the children’s nature’s art workshop, a great way to get kids out involved in nature. They actually take part of the nature and make the artwork out of it. Of course they can drop the kids off there at the art show workshop. And at 10 to 11:15 we have the prime life yoga going on. It happens every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but this one is for tomorrow. This is with Yoga Key West. And then at one o’clock I’m going to do a presentation about the botanical garden keeper of the trees, celebrating 90 years of the garden, historical presentation, exploring the garden’s 90 year legacy of conservation, education, restoration and community stewardship for the city of Key West. So a whole day of action, packed fun, and it’s supposed to be warming up by tomorrow, so it’s a good reason to get out.”
Petals and Pearls is celebrating the garden’s 90th anniversary coming up at the end of January.
McRae said, “We are celebrating the legacy of nine decades. To say that this Botanical Garden is still here after nine decades in a culture and climate of heads and beds, hotels and condos, has been no small feat, so it has to be a big party. So we’re going to be under the stars. We’re going to be over at the Lakeside Terrace. The mayor is going to give a proclamation. We’re going to have talks, we’re going to have an auction, we have live music, catered dinner. It is going to be a festivity to talk about for our entire year. We have a few tickets available. Get your name in there now, because there’s they’re just about sold out. Many thanks to our sponsors for helping us do this and to do it right.”
You can help the garden by becoming a member or a volunteer.
McRae said, “The best way to get out of life is to participate. So please come participate with us.”
