Come see the PicoSure laser in action tomorrow!

Nikki Sommer, a nurse with Key West Surgical Group, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5 FM for Medical Matters this morning.

A brunch will be held tomorrow where the PicoSure Pro laser will be explained, a new implement in the office. It will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3135 Northside Drive.

Sommer said, “Pico second technology is great for tattoo removal. In the original laser that was introduced for tattoo removal, the Q-switch laser, which does a great job, however the PicoSure laser because it has pico-second technology, the higher energy can break the ink particles down without damaging the other areas of the skin. It’s a little bit more gentler. Then your body will absorb that and get rid of the ink. So potentially shorter treatments than any other laser and it does cover most of the colors in a tattoo, where certain lasers cannot hit the reds and sunset colors where the Pico laser can.”

Acne scars can also be treated with the PicoSure laser.

Sommer explained, “There’s a whole skin revitalization component of this laser which is really amazing. What’s great for down here in this weather where it’s hot and you’re always in the sun, a lot of lasers cause a lot of damage and you have long downtime, meaning you really can’t go out in the sun or do anything for one to two weeks. So with the Pico laser, you do not have as much downtime. You’re usually only red for 24 to 48 hours. And reducing melisma, those dark spots that can be hormonal, the sun damage, the freckles that make you look older, the fine lines and wrinkles. We’ll tighten all that up. We’ll just fix it up all around.”

Light snacks and refreshments will be included in tomorrow’s brunch and live demonstrations will be presented.

Sommer said, “We have some nice people that have volunteered for some skin revitalization and tattoo removal. So I’m really excited to show you guys that it’s really a quick procedure. The longest part of it is the numbing, we have to numb you. So that takes about 45 minutes to an hour. So if you do want to come and you don’t have 45 minutes to an hour to hang out at our office, that’s fine. You can come in I’ll put the numbing cream on and you can go in and run an errand and come back in an hour and I can zap you.”

The laser stimulates elastin and collagen to correct wrinkles or blemishes in the complexion.

Sommer said, “It is less painful, usually. I’m not going to tell you you’re not going to have any pain. But it’s kind of like a snapping a rubber band on your skin. A lot of people I’ve talked to since I’ve started using the PicoSure, they said once the treatment is done it stops and then they forget they even had the treatment done. So when I say there’s no downtime, there really isn’t. There’s no lasting effects.”

There are also fewer treatments needed.

Sommer said, “Skin, it depends on what you’re targeting, what your expectation is. I did find a study where there was a significant reduction that lasted over time using a PicoSure laser for sun damage and acne scarring. So pretty interesting stuff, very exciting stuff.”

There also aren’t as many side effects.
