Christine Todd Young, executive director for the Middle Keys Habitat for Humanity, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about various projects for the organization.
There have been some big projects recently.
Young said, “We just finished our largest build in the history of our organization. We completed a total of eight homes. We just got the certificate of occupancy in February and all eight new selected owners have already purchased the homes and are now thriving instead of barely surviving in the wonderful Florida Keys. So it’s a great cause.”
The Mother’s Day Dolphin tournament is this weekend.
Young said, “All the money that we raise at this tournament as well as to the year directly goes to the build costs. Even this tournament even though we finished the homes, we’re still we’re still paying for the build. So the tournament this weekend, the 18th annual Mother’s Day Dolphin tournament, all of the money raised will be helping us get to the finish line of the price tag on the builds that we just completed.”
People can still apply to be in the tournament.
Young said, “We already have 20 boats and about 80 anglers registered and ready to roll. We are expecting a surge today and tomorrow of our lovely last minute-ers. At this point, you can register online that’s actually the preferred method. You can register up to seven o’clock tomorrow night. We do have a captain’s meet and greet with the official judge tomorrow night at the Island Fish Company from five to seven. If by chance someone has an internet glitches and they cannot figure out how to do it or don’t have access, they can meet me there. We want everyone to fish. So please come. We will get you registered. We’re looking for a beautiful Saturday. The lines in on Saturday at 7:30, lines out at 3:30 and the official weigh in is at Curley’s Coffee in Marathon from 3:30 to 6.”
It’s a great event for first time anglers.
Young said, “We are all about our first time anglers. We have a lot of families that this is a tradition they do every year with the kids, the moms, the dads, the brothers, the uncles, but we have seasoned anglers, we have new anglers, this being a one day tournament and of course a fundraiser for Habitat. We encourage everyone who’s ever wanted to fish in a tournament to do it. Of course, we love our longtime captains, they do a lot of charters of our wonderful anglers. We appreciate everyone seasoned or new. It’s a really fun, fun time fishing for a cause. Anyone who has questions, they can call me at 305-797-5779.”
There are also cash prizes totaling more than $9,000.
Young said, “We have lovely trophies. We have an awards banquet, and we also have raffles and a 50/50. We have other items donated by Lower Keys Bait and Tackle and some other things from Sportsman Adventures. You can walk away with prizes, but also knowing you supported a good cause while you’re out fishing.”
