Linda Schaefer from the Marathon Community Theater joined Good Morning Keys on Keys Talk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about the theater.
The Raise the Roof fundraiser is coming right along.
Schaefer said, “We’re getting much closer. We just had Giving Tuesday, we had some nice donations come in for that. We’re closing the gap. We’re really hoping, we had hoped by the end of the calendar year, we would have everything wrapped up, but we are optimistic that it should shortly be taken care of and we’ll get that loan paid off and keep doing what we do at the theater and the cinema.”
The Marathon Community Dance Department has a great production.
Schaefer said, “It is sold out. One thing that we have displayed right now in our gallery is artwork and Julie Jones artwork. They’re having on Sunday, actually, after the dance is on Saturday night, from four to six, they’re having a reception to celebrate the art that’s on sale there, and it’s going to be the whole month of December, and whatever is sold, 20% of those proceeds do go to the theater to help pay off the roof. The artwork is beautiful. I was in the gallery last night. We’re in rehearsals right now for the Odd Couple, and just took a few minutes to walk around and look at all the artwork. So Sunday, from four to six, you can come enjoy a beverage and little snack and do the same thing. Take a look at all the different artwork that’s displayed.”
The Wizard of Oz began the season.
Schaefer said, “Wizard of Oz was absolutely amazing. We were close to sold out numbers every single performance and the the community, the kids that were in it, the adults, the amazing music and special effects. It was spectacular. We were very, very pleased with the show and the following weekend, the 12th and the 13th is our traditional holiday show. It is going to be a family friendly holiday sing along. It’s got some some skits built in, and different groups coming in, and it’s really going to be an event that celebrates the season.”
A New Year’s Murder Mystery will also be happening.
Schaefer said, “It’s gonna to be Casino. This is a murder mystery a little different than we typically do where if you attend, you are one of the actual cast members. So when you go you you receive your top secret information of who your character is and what your motivation is and what you’re trying to hide. As you interact throughout the entire evening playing casinos, you have a roulette table, we’ll have all kinds of different opportunities for that kind of fun. You’re trying to figure out who done it, because there shall be a murder, because it is a murder mystery. So really, really fun. So there’s two opportunities to participate in that.”
The Odd Couple will begin January 8.
Schaefer said, “It harkens back to my childhood watching the TV series as a kid growing up in the 70s, and just that friendship between Oscar Madison, who is just the sloppiest, grumpiest, loudest, most obnoxious person in the world, and that juxtaposition with Felix, who is very neat and tidy but also pretty neurotic. So you have this friendship of two people that really care about each other. And then the rest of the cast, you’ve got poker players and these lovely two British sisters that live in the building. And it’s just fun. It’s Neil Simon. I mean, anything that Neil Simon writes is just so clever and witty, and the comedy is just, it’s natural. It’s just really a great show. We love our community, and we are always looking for volunteers. We have ushers, concession people, ticket takers, all kinds of things, because we are an organization of volunteers. We have only a handful of paid employees, and actually just one full time employee, and the rest are part time and being able to come together and find that common for the theater and for the community, really, it’s very fulfilling, and it’s a lot of fun, and you make a lot of new friends.”
