Rhonda Rebman Lopez, chair of the Republican Party of Monroe County, joined Good Morning Keys on KeysTalk 96.9/102.5FM this morning to talk about what’s going on with the party.
How have things been going?
Lopez said, “I’m just very thankful President Trump was elected as all the Republicans that I know are because he’s doing what he was elected to do, and he’s bringing results. I think that Elon Musk is a great asset, and he got the astronauts back, and President Trump is willing to accept his help and I think it’s wonderful. I think President Trump is, I think he’s actually, I think he’s over performing. He’s outstanding. I mean, I just, he’s amazing. He just has so much energy.”
Lopez has spent some time with Tom Homan, the border czar.
She said, “I attended a luncheon, and he spoke, and I actually spoke to him. I’m hoping to get him down to one of our events, and he was very receptive to that, because we discussed it, and he is really doing a great job. While he was at the event, President Trump actually called and needed to see him in person. I follow him on all the news outlets, and he’s one of my favorites. I think he’s a great, great guy, and he’s great at what he does.”
Indeed, just recently in Monroe County there was an effort to remove illegal immigrants who were serious criminals.
Lopez said, “It’s amazing, and at the same time it’s disturbing some of the illegals that have come into this country and they’ve got to go. I think if they have criminal records, definitely they need to go. So I just am thankful that we’re trying to stop what was going on during Biden’s administration. I think the gates were open, and we were flooded with a lot of people that we do not need in this country.”
Lopez has a lot of experience in Washington.
She said, “I was a flight attendant for American Airlines for 22 years, and I was based in DC and Miami. That’s how I ended up in South Florida. So I was a member of the state societies. I was a little bit involved actually on the volunteer side, and I got to mingle and meet a lot of people, and it was very interesting. My husband was with me, of course, at the inauguration, and I was trying to explain to him how he needed to dress because it was extremely cold. Of course, he’s from Miami, and he was like, this is the coldest place I’ve ever been in my life. I had my furs and everything. I was ready to go, but he thought he could just wing with a hoodie or whatever he wanted. I said, that’s not how it works when it’s five degrees and then five below wind chill.”
There are more elections on the horizon.
Lopez said, “Our Republican Party Monroe County, we help in state, local and national efforts. I got a phone call from our chairman, wondering if we could get some people and other Republicans, we have people all over the county that aren’t members, to make phone calls because we’ve got congressional races, two important seats in the state of Florida. So we are making phone calls, matter of fact, after I get off the phone, I’ll be making them today to the people in that voting area, because those are important seats and the Democrats are pouring millions into those races they are bringing in. So we’ve got to really work hard to keep those seats.”
There are a number clubs within the Republican Party in this area.
Lopez said, “These are chartered clubs with the Republican Party of Florida. They received their letters, and they just got rechartered the Middle, Lower and Upper Keys. They had elections in the past few days, and they have new presidents and new administrations, which they do periodically. Let me tell you, they’re up and running.”
The midterm elections will be quite important.
Lopez said, “I just want everyone to get ready, because we will be having our midterms, and those are huge elections, and we want to turn out the vote just like we did for the general election for President Trump, because we’ve got a governor’s race coming up, which is hugely important, and we want to turn out the vote just like we did for President Trump. We want to do it for whoever will be our Governor and all the other seats local, state and anyone that wants to get involved, don’t be shy. Just let us know. We definitely need your help.”
The Republican Party in Monroe County had been recognized for the percentage of voters that turned out in the general election.
Lopez said, “We turned out the largest percentage in the state, out of 67 counties, we were number one. That didn’t happen in a dream. We worked that big time, whether it be through mailers, anything we could do, phone calls, and I was so proud to receive that award at the Republican Party of Florida quarterly meeting. We want to keep it up. We want to keep it right there and be number one again. We turned out the vote for President Trump more than any county in the state of Florida as well. We turned that out for him, and that was for the primary, I believe it was for the primary. I’m just so happy, and I couldn’t be happier at how enthusiastic and receptive our voters are. Our Republicans are just really stepping up. I just want to thank you, because your show is outstanding for the conservative Keys and the Republicans are just so thankful we have you as well. God bless.”
